Classes at the Marcelo Garcia Academy are held in both Gi and No Gi.
All classes begin with a short dynamic warm up that includes both plyometric and calisthenic exercises. Classes are offered for every level multiple times a week.
Fundamentals 1 Gi Only
Designed to provide students with a solid foundation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, basic BJJ theory, technique and principles are introduced. Each class incorporates flow drills designed to help students internalize the fluid body mechanics behind the concepts they are learning.
Fundamentals 2
A continued exploration of BJJ theory, principles, technique, and body mechanics. Positional sparring and drilling are also core components as they help to develop the student's muscle memory and physical understanding of the sport.
Advanced 1
Take a more in-depth look at the principles and techniques that define Marcelo’s efficient and exciting style. Students should have a solid understanding of basic BJJ principles, fluency in technique, and body awareness. Situational attacks, transitions, escapes and strategies are explored, in addition to a strong emphasis on instinctual application through live sparring.
Advanced 2
Blue Belts and above only.
Expert
This Class will focus on taking the most advanced students to the next level. Fluidity of movement, high level transitions and offensive strategy will be introduced and practiced within the context of Marcelo's game. Progressive drilling patterns and intense sparring will be at the heart of this class. Purple Belts and above only.
Executive Gi Only
A concept-driven class for students at least 35 years old. Proper technique, strategy and body mechanics will be emphasized through BJJ-specific movement exercises, partner flow drills, and positional sparring practice. Our Executive BJJ program offers a conceptual and strategic framework, providing an excellent and safe introduction to the art as well as a forum for more advanced students to deepen their practice.
Open Mat No Gi Only
Open Mat is a non-instructional class where students may practice the application of technique through independent drilling and timed sparring matches. Students are encouraged to conceptualize their strengths and weaknesses, and to work on internalizing what they learned throughout the week. Guidance by instructors is available.
